Jack Leland Bailey It is with deep regret that we mark the passing of Jack Bailey in mid-February, 2001. His family and friends have suffered an enormous loss as has the entire art world. Winner ot the "Prix de Rome" in painting, 1969-1972, Jack Bailey stayed on in Europe for many years, where his painting received enormous critical acclaim. Since 1974, his paintings have largely been acquired by the great Swiss collector, Georges Marci, whose collection includes some of the finest works of the giants of 20th century art. This association has resulted in Bailey's paintings being exhibited side by side with Picasso, Bacon, Johns, etc., in museums and other serious venues throughout Europe, Russia, and the Far East. The three paintings shown here were done in 1967 and 1968. |

~ Arturo Bovi, Dean of Fine Art, University of Rome ~ "Jack Leland Bailey attains an expressive security free from the past... as Goya said, 'reasons sleep produces monsters'." ~ Engo Bilardelli II, Margutta ~ "IN THE CITY transcends time the way Francisco de Goya's 'Third of May' transcends the mass execution of Spanish patriots in the last century. One doesn't have to witness the executions to know what oppression is. And one doesn't have to have witnessed race riots to know what rage is. 'In The City', then becomes a kind of time machine that takes viewers back to their own remembrances of rage. The painting takes you where your emotions lead you - the way of all masterworks." ~ Art critic, Joan Altabe, 1989 ~ |

~ Arts (France) ~ "A frank expressionism pervades this specter, where the dramatic contrast of light and dark serves to illustrate the inescapable truth of war. It is Bailey's masterpiece. A powerful requiem for our time." ~ Kevin Costello, 1990 ~ |
